Bill Plympton, Golden Romics of the 36th edition

The “King of Indie Animation”, master of independent animation and cult author of world animation, awarded the Romics d'Oro.

Bill Plympton, one of the most original and influential figures in contemporary animation and universally recognized as the “King of Indie Animation”, will be celebrated with the awarding of the Golden Romics during the 36th edition of Romics, scheduled from April 9 to 12, 2026, Fiera Roma

Author, director, animator and illustrator, Plympton is known for his unmistakable style and for carrying out, for over four decades, a totally independent vision of animation, AND he was the first artist to completely hand-draw an animated interior film.

Born in Portland, Oregon, and moved to New York in 1968, Plympton began his career as an illustrator and cartoonist, publishing cartoons and illustrations in some of the most important American magazines, including The New York Times, The New Yorker, National Lampoon, Playboy, and Screw. His work soon found a new dimension in animation, where he stood out for a completely hand-drawn style and a radically independent authorial approach.

In 1987 he received an Oscar® nomination for the animated short film Your Face, followed in 2005 by a second nomination for Guard Dog. His films have received awards at major international festivals: Push Comes to Shove won the Prix du Jury at the Cannes Film Festival in 1991, while in 2001 the short film Eat won the Grand Prize for Short Films at the Semaine de la Critique in Cannes.

After making numerous short films that became famous thanks in part to their distribution on MTV and on cult programs such as Spike and Mike's Festival of Animation, Plympton dedicated himself to feature films. Since 1991, he has made eleven films, including several animated feature films that have now become reference works of independent cinema, such as The Tune, Mondo Plympton, I Married a Strange Person!, Mutant Aliens, Hair High, Idiots and Angels, Cheatin’, Revengeance and Slide.

Throughout his career he has also collaborated with important figures in music and entertainment, creating music videos and artistic projects with Madonna, Kanye West and “Weird Al” Yankovic, as well as numerous advertising campaigns for brands such as Geico, Ford, Mercedes, Nike, Taco Bell and Trivial Pursuit.

Recognitions include the Winsor McCay Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Annie Awards in 2006 and the National Cartoonist Society's Lifetime Achievement Award. He also made eight famous “couch gags” for the animated series The Simpsons.

During the 36th edition of Romics, Bill Plympton will meet the public in an event dedicated to his career and artistic vision, offering visitors the opportunity to discover up close the work of one of the most important protagonists of international independent animation.
