Ryan Ottley

Golden Romics of the XXV edition

Ryan Ottley is one of the most important comic book artists of contemporary American comics. He is best known for his work on Invincible and, most recently, The Amazing Spider-Man.  Enthralled at the age of 15 by an issue of Amazing Spiderman (drawn by Todd McFarland) that his cousin Bryan had given him, Ryan Ottley immediately realized that this was the path he wanted to follow. After debuting as an artist (and co-creator) of the web-strip Bicycle Delivery Boy, he met Robert Kirkman, creator of the cult saga The Walking Dead. Ottley then went on to draw the first five issues of Haunt – a superhero series by Image Comics, created by Kirkman and Todd McFarlane – and then moved on to drawing for the regular Invincible series. From that moment on, Ottley’s life was changed and he established his name as one of the most interesting players in American comics. After 13 years of exceptional success thanks to Invincible, Ottley and Kirkman decided to conclude the series recounting the tales of Mark Grayson. They planned out one last extensive narrative arc, and the twenty-fifth and final volume of the series was published in the USA in 2018 (published in Italy by saldaPress at the end of 2018), while the Italian monthly edition will be concluded in January 2020. Meanwhile, he is working on two adaptations from the Invincible series. One is a cinematic film that will be produced by Universal, written and directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, while the other will be an animated series produced by Amazon. Ottley is also the creator, screenwriter, and artist of a wacky graphic novel entitled Grizzlyshark, soon to become a cult comic in the US and Italy. Everything revolves around the Grizzlysharks, which, unlike typical sharks, live in the woods and attack anyone who bleeds. Grizzlyshark is very different from Invincible and in this series Ottley's style is taken to the extreme, more cartoonish and as far as possible from any sense of realism, an aspect that is instead very present in Invincible. Grizzlyshark is now also a worldwide success.
