Oscar Martin

Oscar Martín, Golden Romics of the 35th edition

From Tom & Jerry Comics to the Solo Saga, from Disney Stories to Dystopian Worlds: The European Comics Master Awarded the Romics d’Oro

Oscar Martín, one of the most versatile and acclaimed figures in European comics—effortlessly navigating from classic animated characters to dark, violent, and action-packed narratives—will be honored with the Romics d’Oro award during the 35th edition of the Festival, taking place from October 2 to 5, 2025, at Fiera Roma.

He made his debut in the mid-1980s as an illustrator for Tom & Jerry, a classic license produced for the German publisher Condor. By the end of the decade, he had also entered the Disney universe, collaborating primarily with the Dutch and Danish markets until the early 2000s, contributing numerous stories featuring Burbank's iconic characters. In 1990, he created The Terrifying World of Bobby, published by French publisher Semic and in Italy by ReNoir Comics, marking the beginning of his journey as a full-fledged author. In 1996, he became art director for the Spanish magazine Zona X, helping to redefine its visual and narrative identity. Martín’s talent gained international recognition in 2002, when Warner Bros. awarded him the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award for his exceptional contributions to Tom & Jerry, a series he continues to illustrate successfully to this day.

In 2005, he entered a new phase of his career, collaborating with French publisher Casterman on the series La Gilda, written by Miroslav Dragan and also published in Italy by ReNoir Comics. During this same period, he began developing his most personal work: Solo, a visceral and evocative saga about an anthropomorphic warrior rat in a post-apocalyptic world known as the Cannibal World. What began as a standalone graphic novel quickly evolved into a multi-volume saga, spawning several spin-offs and gaining a cult following among fans of independent comics.

A complete author—illustrator, writer, and world-builder—Oscar Martín continues to stand out for his dynamic linework, straightforward storytelling, and ever-evolving artistic vision, blending the language of classic comics with contemporary, thought-provoking themes.

During the 35th edition of Romics, Oscar Martín will take part in a special talk retracing the key milestones of his artistic career. He will also be featured in a dedicated exhibition showcasing his works and will premiere Solo – Integrale 3, the final volume in the saga, published by ReNoir Comics.
