Jordi Bernet

Golden Romics of the XXIX edition

Jordi Bernet Cussò made his debut in the world of comics at the age of 15, he was born in Barcelona in 1944 in a family of artists already very close to comics. He worked on the humorous series DoñaUrraca, created by his father, Miguel Bernet Toledano, continuing his business. In the sixties he worked on many works, also for the English market, until arriving in 1968 to the magazine Spirou. In 1982 he began working on the cult character Torpedo 1936, created by Enrique Sanchez Abuli and drawn until then by Alex Toth; the story of the Sicilian gangster Luca Torelli,  alias Torpedo, is also published in Italy for several years. "It was Federico Fellini, in one of our wanderings at night, who spoke to me for the first time of Jordi Bernet, with enthusiasm and gratitude. Fellini - he was crazy for Torpedo, I for Rascal - his funny friend and sidekick - but we were both in love with his little women full of charm and humor... His is fully drawn literature, it is comic art elevated to the nth degree. It is the human adventure that manifests it self naked and raw for what it is, without the need for tricks or fictions succeeding in an absolute artistic miracle: fill with good humor even the most ruthless stories". (Vincenzo Mollica, The art of Bernet, Edizioni Di, 2022) Bernet continues to work on Torpedo and other great international successes, such as Sarvan and Kraken, written by Antonio Segura, Chiara di notte and Cicca dum du, on texts by Carlos Trillo and Eduardo Maicas. Bernet then collaborated with DC Comics on the series Batman: black and white and in 2007 joined the staff of the series Jonah Hex. In 1996 he released his highly anticipated Tex, giant issue no. 10 written by Claudio Nizzi. Sergio Bonelli thus recalled that moment: "when I had resigned myself and dared not repeat my ancient proposal, an unexpected change of scene happened. Perhaps moved by my patient resignation but also by my disinterested friendship, Jordi Bernet, behind a nice smile, surprised me spontaneously offering for a future Tex as long as "contrary to tradition" (as he added maliciously) could count on the presence of some beautiful maiden."  (The art of Bernet, Edizioni Di, 2022).
