Daniele Serra
Daniele Serra is an Italian illustrator. Three-time British Fantasy Award winner as "Best Artist" (2012, 2017 and 2021) and finalist at the 2021 World Fantasy Award, she has made covers, interior illustrations and comic book adaptations for the likes of Stephen King, Clive Barker, Ramsey Campbell, Joe R. Lansdale and Joyce Carol Oates. His main influences and inspirations come from the Weird and horror fiction of H. P. Lovecraft and William H. Hodgson, from Ridley Scott’s films, from Japanese horror films and from the works of Clive Barker.Fascinated by horror imagery before even starting his career, has immediately matured its distinctive style. Plays of contrasts between bright colors and dark shades, curved strokes, shadows, rarefied dark atmospheres characterize his works, made mostly of watercolor, as well as ink and charcoal.
As a comic artist, he has worked with DC Comics (Pray for Deaths, written by Nicholas Doan), Image Comics (Fade to black, written by Jeff Mariotte), BOOM! Studios (Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Bestiary, AA. VV.), Titan Comics (Dark Souls, AA. VV.), Seraphim INC. (Clive Barker'sHellraiser Anthology vol. 1-2, AA. VV.) , SST Publications (I tell you, it’s love, also in the Italian version published by BD ComicsFidati è amore, based on a story by Joe R. Lansdale), Mondadori (Murder Ballads, texts by Micol Beltramini), Bonelli (Gentleman’s hotel, text by Luca Crovi, based on a story by Joe R. Lansdale).
His artbook was published by PS Publishing, with an introduction by Clive Barker.
Daniele has illustrated over 300 covers of novels published by publishing houses around the world. It is his entire artwork for Tommyknockers, a three-volume work by Stephen King, published by PS Publishing. Among the covers stand out the collaborations with authors such as Clive Barker, J.R. Lansdale, Paul Tremblay, Gwendolyn Kiste, Tim Lebbon, Josh Malerman, Stephen Graham Jones and publishing houses such as PS Publishing, Thunderstorm Books, Dark Region Press, SST Publishing, Cemetery Dance, Buchheim Verlag, Raw Dog Screaming Press, Season of Mist, Fanucci, Solferino, Corbaccio and Sperling and Kupfer.
Some of his works have been used as scenography in Stephen King’s film adaptation of Cell, directed by Tod Williams and starring John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson (International Film Trust). He illustrated the opening and closing credits of the Japanese film Rageaholic by Yoshiki Takahashi (Kokuei Company). Passionate about music and musician, he has also made artwork for records of bands such as Shining (IX, Season of Mist), :wumpscut: (Madman - Szpital Box, Beton Kopf Media), So Hideous (Laurestine,Prosthetic Records) and Hapax (Exile, Swiss dark nights). He lives on an island in his home-studio with his cats, several exotic insects and a remarkable collection of horror films and books.
