Guests of Honor/Claudio Villa

Who knows how Claudo Villa felt when he learnt he had been chosen as cover artist for Tex?

Claudio Villa

Having dedicated his whole life to comics, he was already one of Bonelli’s most successful professionals, but think about it: taking over from Aurelio Galeppini on Italy’s most famous comic, with constant commitment for one of the most fascinating and difficult careers in the world of drawn literature, must have been quite daunting!
Because, as Villa himself says, every cover must tell a story without revealing too much, it must be immediately legible, it must be interesting and sufficiently dynamic: an accurate study of light, posture, backgrounds, balance between action and the stance the protagonists.

But Villa was chosen because he is the best, because his entire career is founded on his love of comics, of great action heroes, especially Bonelli’s.
Villa grew up with comics such as Nembo Kid and Zagor and began his studies with the great Franco Bignotti, author of those Zagor adventures which had fascinated him so much. A little later, in 1980, he began drawing professionally and, in just two years, started his extraordinary career with Bonelli.
From Martin Mystère, then on to Tex, Villa also worked with Sclavi on the realisation of the phenomenal Dylan Dog, for which he created the first, exceptional covers. He then worked on an identity for Claudio Nizzi’s Nick Raider, and yet more stories for Tex. And so forth to become Bonelli’s frontman, charged with creating a new cover for every issue of Tex and living up to the ranger’s name and fame.

And, in the meantime, he had the chance to venture into the world of American superheroes, realising with Tito Faraci a superb story for Devil and Capitan America, produced and published in Italy by Panini Comics.

Inspired by such great names in international comics as Neal Adams, Alex Ross and Curt Swarm, Claudio Villa has been defined, and rightly so, as the master of Italian comics’ new realism: an exceptional author whose trademark is the expression of his characters, an accurate research of detail, the anatomy of horses and, above all, his mastery in bonding narration and image, creating action from "simple" drawings. Claudio Villa deserves the admiration of critics and the public, and he deserves the Golden Romics Award which will be presented to him this year at Romics, accompanied by our hopes for countless future opportunities to enjoy his wonderful art.

Biographical Notes

Claudio Villa

Born in Lomazzo, in the province of Como, Italy, in 1959, Claudio Villa grew up with superhero action and adventure comics and I Classici dell'Audacia, which bring together the best European stories. Fascinated by Bonelli’s heroes, Villa served his apprenticeship at Franco Bignotti’s studio (author of Zagor and Mister No), and made his professional debut in 1980, for L.U.G. publishers.

Two years later he joined Sergio Bonelli Publisher, working at first on the drawings for Martin Mystère, and later for Tex. At the same time he became cover artist for the first 41 issues of Dylan Dog, the phenomenally popular comic that Villa realised with writer Tiziano Sclavi, and contributed to the ideation of another mythical Bonelli hero, detective Nick Raider.

Characterised by a clean, detailed and highly realistic style, Villa is a real master of dynamic action: qualities which have made him the ideal candidate for the role of cover artist for the albums of Italy’s longest-living and most famous comics hero: Tex Willer.

Claudio Villa is also the author of Trenta giorni a Palermo, dedicated to the last days in the lives of Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino.
